NJ Battery & Energy Programs — What's Real Now
New Jersey has a live utility battery pilot and proposed statewide storage and Virtual Power Plant programs. Here is the honest, verified picture as of October 2026 — what's live, what's coming, and what has ended. Program details should be checked against current NJBPU, PSE&G, and NJEDA sources before making a purchase decision.
Available Now
PSE&G GridSmart Battery Program Live
up to $5,000 in incentives toward the purchase and installation of a qualifying home battery, plus up to $25,000 in interest-free on-bill repayment for remaining installation costs. For PSE&G residential electric customers; launched August 2026. Participating systems may be dispatched during scheduled GridSmart Events (advance notice; opt out anytime).
Equipment and contractor eligibility rules apply. PSE&G requires a participating contractor for this incentive; check the current PSE&G contractor directory before relying on the rebate. Program terms can change.
Discuss Battery StorageFederal 48E Commercial Storage Credit Live
Qualifying commercial battery storage may be eligible for the Section 48E federal investment tax credit. The base rate is 6%; an increased rate of up to 30% depends on prevailing-wage and apprenticeship requirements or an applicable exception. Bonus adders and depreciation treatment are project-specific. Storage is treated separately from the accelerated solar and wind placed-in-service deadline.
Tax treatment varies by project structure — confirm with your tax professional.
NJ Sales Tax Exemption Live
Solar energy devices and systems — expressly including mechanical or chemical devices for storing solar-generated energy — are 100% exempt from New Jersey's 6.625% sales and use tax (N.J.S.A. 54:32B-8.33). Ask your tax professional or supplier to confirm the exemption documentation for a qualifying solar-plus-storage installation.
The statute clearly covers storage paired with solar; treatment of standalone batteries without solar is not explicit — we confirm before quoting.
Coming Soon — Proposed, Not Yet Open
These programs are real and in active development at the NJBPU, but they are not accepting applications and final rules are pending. We do not quote these as payment promises — we build systems that are ready to enroll the day they open.
GSESP Phase 2, Block 1 — Distributed Storage Proposed
New Jersey's Garden State Energy Storage Program Block 1 proposes roughly 150 MW of new residential behind-the-meter storage, administered by the four electric utilities (PSE&G, JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric, Rockland) with first-come, first-served enrollment and performance-based payments over a 10-year term tied to grid dispatch events. The straw proposal was released August 2026; launch is expected by July 2027 pending final Board approval. Future blocks for commercial behind-the-meter storage at critical facilities are explicitly anticipated.
New Jersey Virtual Power Plant (VPP) Proposed
The NJBPU is designing a statewide VPP that aggregates customer-sited batteries — residential and small commercial — and dispatches them when the grid needs power. Utility program filings are due by the end of 2026, the interim program is expected to launch by July 1, 2027, and it transitions to an open-access, market-based VPP tariff in 2029. Equipment and future enrollment requirements must be assessed for each project; program rules are not final.
For Commercial Fleets: NJEDA Take Charge
Take Charge Program Applications Open
NJEDA's $25M pilot funds $100,000 to $5 million in grants covering ~50% of eligible costs (up to 60% in overburdened communities or for small businesses) for fleet EV charging installations in New Jersey — and every project must include on-site solar and/or battery storage as part of the scope. Charger hardware, make-ready electrical work, network subscriptions, and the required solar/storage are all eligible. A utility capacity review is required before applying, and all construction must be performed by NJ DOL public-works-registered contractors at prevailing wage.
Fleet eligibility rules apply (2+ commercial vehicles, decarbonization plan, NJ tax clearance). Grant terms per NJEDA program specifications (August 2026).

Federal 25D Residential Credit Ended
The 30% federal residential clean energy credit for homeowner-owned solar and battery systems ended December 31, 2025. There is no federal tax credit on homeowner-owned battery systems installed in 2026. (Systems placed in service in 2025 can still be claimed on a 2025 return — ask your tax preparer.) If another installer quotes a "30% federal credit" on a 2026 residential install, ask questions.
Statewide NJ Battery Rebate Not Yet
There is no statewide NJ battery rebate today — the GridSmart incentive is PSE&G-territory-specific. JCP&L, Atlantic City Electric, and Rockland do not currently offer residential battery rebates (verified October 2026); GSESP Phase 2 is expected to change that in 2027.
